What is Brand Identity and What Does It Consist Of

Brand identity, corporate style, branding — these terms are often confused. Let's figure out what's what, and why brand identity matters for business.

Brand Identity vs Branding vs Corporate Style

Branding

Everything related to the brand: strategy, positioning, values, brand voice, visual identity. Branding is "who you are" and "how you're perceived."

Brand Identity (Visual Identity)

The visual part of branding. Everything that can be seen: logo, colors, fonts, graphics, photography style. Brand identity is "how you look."

Corporate Style

Practically a synonym for brand identity. Sometimes corporate style refers to a narrower set of elements (logo + business card + letterhead).

What Brand Identity Consists Of

Core Elements:

1. Logo

The main brand identifier. Types include:

  • Text-based (wordmark)
  • Graphic (symbol)
  • Combined

2. Color Palette

Primary and secondary colors. Usually 2-5 colors with exact values (HEX, RGB, CMYK, Pantone).

3. Typography

Fonts for headings and body text. Can be standard or custom-designed.

4. Graphic Elements

  • Patterns
  • Icons
  • Illustrations
  • Brand shapes

5. Photography Style

Rules for shooting and editing photos: color correction, composition, subjects.

Brand Identity Carriers:

  • Business: business cards, letterheads, envelopes, folders
  • Marketing: presentations, brochures, banners
  • Digital: website, social media, email newsletters
  • Spatial: signage, interiors, wayfinding
  • Product: packaging, labels

When Your Business Needs Brand Identity

Definitely needed if:

  • Launching a new business/product
  • Entering a new market
  • Planning to scale
  • Current style is outdated or not working
  • Want to raise prices and status

You can manage without full brand identity if:

  • Testing an idea/MVP
  • Working solo with no growth plans
  • Budget is critically limited

But even in these cases, a basic logo and colors are a must-have.

Examples of Good and Bad Brand Identity

Good brand identity:

  • Recognizable — you identify the brand even without the logo
  • Consistent — looks the same everywhere
  • Unique — stands out from competitors
  • Scalable — works on a business card and a billboard

Bad brand identity:

  • Every medium looks different
  • Colors shift from one material to another
  • Looks like competitors
  • Logo is unreadable at small sizes

Brand Book — Why You Need One

A brand book (guidelines) is a document describing the rules for using brand identity:

  • How to use the logo
  • Which colors to use and where
  • Which fonts and sizes
  • Examples of correct and incorrect usage

It's needed to keep the brand identity consistent, even when different people work with it.

What Affects Brand Identity Development Cost

The cost depends on scope and depth:

  • Number of elements: logo only or complete identity system
  • Number of carriers: basic set or extended package
  • Brand book: whether a usage guidelines document is needed
  • Strategy: whether positioning work is required
  • Number of concepts and revision rounds
